This is another picture from Point Defiance. I could go into detail on how the Asia exhibit works, but pretty much the day we were there the river otters and tapir enclosures were connected.

There were only two of us FWers that got to see this, but we got a kick out of it!

Bloody otters - my local zoo (Adelaide, Australia) used to have the otters and Asian tapirs together and the otters were horrible to the tapirs. Thing is, were tapirs aggressive animals, they’d only have had to kick them a couple of times and the otters would have left them alone for good.
Both species also had problems with blindness - possibly due to the brightness of the enclosure (lack of shade cover), water pollution or a virus - nobody really knows what caused it.
did the otters kill the tapir? Or is the tapir just tired from chasing them around?
tiki: I think the tapir was trying to sleep, but the otters keep waking it up.
It is very cute.
The tapir was sleeping, and the otters were sniffing and poking at its head.
