Uglorable is 5 years old today.

And in honor of its birthday, a lumpsucker!

Lumpsuckers are a favorite among fish & wildlife students. They have a little suction cup on them, so they stick to stuff.

So I was studying for my ichthyology final which is in… Ten hours… And I came across this awesome video that my professor used in one of his lectures. And I’ve been meaning to see if I could find it online, but I forgot about it until just now. So here it is.

Watch it SHOOT OUT ITS PHARYNGEAL JAWS (secondary jaws in the throat, basically). For the record, before this no one knew pharyngeal jaws were used for capture. It’s just… Awesome!

I’m taking Ichthyology right now, and my professor showed a picture of a baby ocean sunfish in class. Apparently they have up to 300 million babies at a time. And they’re tiny and planktonic and uglorable.

I will probably be posting fish for a while…. A lot of them are pretty uglorable.

Frogfish are another animal I think I could post forever. They’re a family of anglerfish that use some of their fins to walk around the ocean floor, but what I particularly like about them is that they are great at camouflaging themselves to not be detected by their prey. They appear in a large number of great colors and patterns, and range from “lumpy” to “very lumpy!” They’re all very Uglorable.

This kind of seems a little mean, but it’s kind of interesting! In this video, cuttlefish react to a live video of themselves on the monitor of a handheld video camera.

Phil Demurs posted another video of the media’s coverage of his relationship with Smooshie the walrus. I think it’s the best story yet!

I haven’t seen anybody mention (although I’m sure many have) that “walrus” in French is “morse,” Polish “mors,” and in several other languages “morsa,” which I think sounds a bit like his last name, “Demers.” Phil de Morse?
